Turnage to screen Sundance-selected documentary Dec. 11

Published 12:00 pm Friday, December 7, 2018

Next Tuesday at 7 p.m., a free showing of Working Films’ documentary, “The Devil We Know,” will be on the big screen at the historic Turnage Theatre.

Join us for the free screening of “The Devil We Know.” A documentary unraveling one of the biggest environmental scandals of our time, this film shows how a group of citizens in West Virginia take on the powerful corporation DuPont, after they discovered it had knowingly been dumping a toxic chemical — now found in the blood of 99.7 percent of Americans — into the drinking water supply.

“The Devil We Know” serves as a prequel to the Gen-X water crisis happening in North Carolina due to the chemical dumping by the DuPont spin-off corporation, Chemours. Join us for this free screening and discussion.

This film is being hosted by Arts of the Pamlico and Sound Rivers, in partnership with NC Conservation Network, Center for Environmental Health, Cape Fear River Watch and Working Films (www.workingfilms.org). Working Films uses documentaries to advance social justice and environmental protection.

The event begins at 6 p.m. with open concessions and appetizers provided by Sound Rivers from Carryout by Chrislyn. Tickets are not required.

Stay after the film to for a question and answer period with two East Carolina University researches, Dr. Jamie Dewitt and Dr. David Collier, and Sound Rivers riverkeeper Forrest English. Forrest brings a range of experience to the position, including previous work as a water quality technician, wildlife surveyor, deckhand on commercial fishing boats and heavy equipment operator on watershed restoration projects. Most recently, Forrest has worked with Klamath Riverkeeper and was the director of Rogue Riverkeeper, where he advocated for the health of river watersheds in the west. This includes experience with the design and implementation of water quality studies using community volunteers and building relationships with local government and other non-profits. You can reach Forrest before or after the film at pamtarrk@soundrivers.org.
