GREENVILLE — The Washington Lady Pam Pack bounced back from its defeat on the first day of the Pitt County Holiday Tournament with a 43-39 win over host J.H. Rose Thursday night, using an 11-0 run while trailing by eight points late in the third quarter to spark itself to victory.

Washington (3-6, 1-2 2A Eastern Carolina Conference) head coach Ralph Biggs was really impressed with his team’s energy and effort against Rose (0-9, 0-1 3A Eastern Carolina Conference) after opening the tournament with a 67-16 loss to Farmville Central on Wednesday

“Daria Jones sparked us on the offensive glass,” Biggs said. “I think the layups she made sparked our team in the second half. I’m also proud of our bench unit. They brought us back when we were down eight late in the third quarter. Once we found our momentum, we were able to get past a really good team.”

Jones dominated the glass and scored 12 points, but it was Briasia Somerville who led the Lady Pam Pack in scoring with 13. It was a back-and-forth game for the most part, but it felt like Rose was going to pull away. However, Washington’s defense and offensive rebounding pushed the Pam Pack over the finish line in the end.

“I’m ecstatic and so proud of my team today,” Biggs added.” It shows a lot of character to come out and play hard after a tough loss yesterday. We could’ve mailed it in after what happened against Farmville Central. Our second-unit guards didn’t turn the ball over when I played them and they attacked the basket well.”

Washington will take on Ayden-Grifton in a consolation game. While it will not count towards the conference standings, Biggs is hoping his team can continue to progress and avenge a 46-39 loss to the Chargers on Dec. 12.

“We want to continue to build on this,” Biggs said. “Ayden-Grifton is a good team and they played us great the first time. To get a better result, we can’t turn the ball over. We also have to make our layups and free throws. This is a big chance for us to get two wins in a really good tournament. Once again, I’m so proud of the team for playing so hard.”
