Mattie Elizabeth Thompson Gough

Mrs. Mattie Elizabeth Thompson Gough passed away Thursday, Jan. 3, 2019, at Roanoke Landing Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Plymouth, surrounded by family and friends. Mattie was born on Dec. 28, 1930, in the Winsteadville Community (Belhaven) to the late Johnnie and Ola Sawyer Thompson. She is also predeceased by her brother, Ivey Thompson, infant sister, Lorraine Hope Thompson, and granddaughter, Tammy Spann.
She attended the former John A. Wilkinson High School in Belhaven with the class of 1948. Mattie married the late James Canady of New Bern in 1949. She was a lifetime member of the Methodist Church. Later, she married the late Lloyd Gough from Yadkinville, and they made their home in Hamptonville. She worked as a nursing assistant for the local hospital and later at the U.S. Postal Service. Mattie and Lloyd moved to Florida after they retired. She enjoyed art and crafts and would proudly display her creations. Mattie returned to Belhaven to be with her sister and family. She and her sister, Alice, had lots of love for each other. The years they had together will always be remembered.
Mattie is survived by her daughters, Vicky Canady Calloway and Nancy Gough Schraeder (Dave); grandchildren, Kevin and Melissa Calloway; three great-grandchildren; sister, Alice T. Craddock (Guy); special nieces and nephews, Heather Craddock Spruill (Thomas), Johnny, Roy and Michael Craddock, Neil and C. Thompson, Sandra Moore (Glenn) and Karen Holt (Brian); and sister-in-law, Vivian Thompson.
The family would like to personally thank the staff of Roanoke Landing Rehabilitation and Nursing Center and the staff of O’Neals Drug Store of Belhaven.
A celebration of Mattie’s life will be 11 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 12, 2019, at Hillside Funeral Service, with Rev. James Scheffler officiating. Burial will follow in Yeatesville Cemetery. Pallbearers serving the family are Michael Craddock, Thomas Spruill, Paul Andrews, Noah Andrews, Michael Spencer and David Kirk. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Pantego Volunteer Fire Department.
