Richard Vernon “Skip” Midgett, Sr., age 72, of Washington, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2019, at his home after a lengthy battle with cancer.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, 2019, at Alligood Church of God, officiated by pastors Gary Bateman and Philip Jethro. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the memorial in the church sanctuary.

Skip was born in Roper on Jan. 16, 1946, to the late Charlie Vernon Midgett and Hattie Estelle Hudson Midgett. He married the love of his life, Donna, on Nov. 6, 1971. He spent most of his adult life living in the Hamptons Roads area of Virginia, building the interstate highway system. He later returned with his family to Beaufort County and worked for Tri-County Telecom (Riverstreet Networks) for more than 20 years.

Skip loved to be outside, working in his yard, tending to his chickens, fiddling in his shop or working in his garden. He loved watching westerns on TV, bird hunting, listening to oldies, and most importantly he loved and adored his family, especially his four grandchildren.

Skip is survived by his wife of 47 years, Donna; their children, Richard V. “Little Skip” Midgett, Jr., of Hampton, Virginia, Robert N. Midgett (Patsy), of Washington, and Nickie M. Rich (Doug), of Nashville, North Carolina; grandchildren, Alyssa G. Cartwright, Natalie S. Cartwright, Savannah K. Rich and Lincoln E. Rich; sisters, Carol Alligood (Colon), Joyce Hatcher, Betty Sue King,and Linda K. Nichols (David).

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Wilson E. Squires and Frank R. “Billy” Squires, and a very special nephew, Major Colon (Rufus) Alligood, Jr.

The family would like to thank all the employees of Tri-County (Riverstreet) Telecom, for their years of continued support, love and concern for Skip and our family. The family would also like to thank Community Hospice Care for all their help and support, and the great care they provided, especially nurse Brooke Baynor.
