Tune in to HGTV tonight, and you’ll get a winning look at one Beaufort County property.

Tonight’s episode of “My Lottery Dream Home” features 41 Canal Court in Chocowinity, one of several homes picked as possibility for a set of new lottery winners. The show will air at 9 p.m.

“It was a great experience. They were very nice and very down to earth,” Maria Wilson, co-owner and broker with Coldwell Banker Coastal Rivers Realty, said of cast and crew.

Wilson said show producers contacted her last October about some of her listings that fell in the right in the price range. They sent an exploratory crew, took a tour of the listings and decided the Bayside Shores home of David and Laura Newsome was just what they were looking for.

“It’s a cute home to show. Actually, that’s how it all got started,” David Newsome said.

The Newsomes, originally from Freemont, bought the house in 2015 and gut-renovated the three bedroom, three bath house located on a bulkheaded canal in the quiet, waterfront neighborhood.

“Everything in it is new. The only thing not new about it is the shell — new roof, new heating, new plumbing, new wiring, new flooring” Newsome said.

The Newsomes were drawn to the waterfront cottage because of its location and the convenience of living in a secluded spot only 10 minutes away from town.

“We had been at the campground at Whichard’s Beach, and we had done the beach thing at the coast, and we were tired of the hustle and bustle of the beach, so we moved back to the river for a more laidback scene,” Newsome said.

After a few years, they realized, however, that as perfect as this coastal cottage is, their family required more space for their get-togethers, so the couple built a new home in Bath.

That’s where “My Lottery Dream Home” comes in, as it was one of the properties on the market at the time.

“We’re tickled to death. That somebody took interest in your house, someone way off somewhere, someone makes a show about it — it makes you feel good that someone likes the work you’ve done,” Newsome said.

The premise of the show is that host David Bromstad assists new lottery winners in finding their perfect home, weighing the pros and cons of each and narrowing down a field of three until a “winner” is chosen.

But the real winners might be those already living in the area.

“Anytime you get national exposure is great, not just for real estate but for businesses,” Wilson said. “People from Greenville, from Raleigh, from Charlotte, I think they’ll see some of the businesses that are showcased (on the show), and maybe they’ll want to come for a weekend.”

Wilson said that exposure could result in those in the market for a home looking a little harder at this market.

“I think we’ve been a hidden gem for a long, long time. We’re that little jewel on the Pamlico River, and the affordability of what we offer, the beauty, there aren’t many places that have that,” Wilson said. “I feel like our values are just excellent for what you get for the money. They’re excellent. To have the little town of Washington, with the cute shops and restaurants, and to have Greenville so close by, to have all the services that a larger city provides, that’s just a perfect combination — to live in a small town that’s close to a big town.”

While a pair of lottery winners may or may not have chosen the Bayside Shores cottage (tune in tonight to find out) as their lottery dream home, Newsome said whoever ends up buying the house will get their own prize: great neighbors.
