A woman found unconscious with a needle in her lap at a local gas station led Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office deputies on a brief car chase Tuesday before voluntarily surrendering.

According to BCSO Lt. Jim Vanlandingham, the owner of Travel Store #7, located across U.S. Highway 264 from Beaufort County Community College, called 911 shortly after 2 p.m. on Tuesday after finding the woman. Beaufort County EMS Personnel and BCSO deputies responded to the scene.

A BCSO press release states that deputy Phillip Peaden was the first to arrive on scene and attempted to make contact with the woman. When she noticed his presence, Brittany Ann Futrell, 29, of La Grange, sped away, leading Peaden and other deputies on a brief chase. She was taken into custody after voluntarily stopping her vehicle on N.C. Highway 32 North, near Casey Road.

Based on evidence found in her car, what the release calls “obvious signs of impairment,” Futrell was charged with felony fleeing to elude arrest, felony possession of heroin, driving while impaired and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Vanlandingham said that the heroin in her possession was of a quantity that would be considered for personal use.

As of Thursday afternoon, Futrell was being held in the Beaufort County Detention Center under a $15,500 secured bond.
