Milton Selby Brooks, Sr.

Mr. Milton Selby Brooks, Sr., age 83, a resident of Washington, died Friday, May 10, 2019, at his home.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Monday, May 13, 2019, at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory in Washington and other times at his home

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 14, 2019, at the First Christian Church in Washington, conducted by Dr. Robert Cayton. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery.

The following will serve as pallbearers: Jimmy Thorpe, Lee Warner, Alton Griffin, Larry Picard, Larry Younker and Larry Sipe.

Mr. Brooks was born in Beaufort County on Feb. 1, 1936. He was the son of the late Hillary C. Brooks and Donnie M. Cutler Brooks. Mr. Brooks graduated from Washington High School and attended Chowan College on a football scholarship. He served 13 years in the National Guard. He had a strong work ethic, working two to three jobs at a time before starting his own business, Tankard Amusements, which has been in business for 50 years. He enjoyed playing cards and watching his son and grandchildren play sports growing up. He was a member of the Moose Lodge, First Christian Church and the Coin Operators Association, where he was a past president.

On Nov. 27, 1968, Mr. Brooks married the former Marie Edwards, who survives.

Surviving with his wife are his son, Milton Brooks Jr. and wife Stacy Alexis Rowe Brooks, of Washington; two grandchildren, Alexis Mackenzie Brooks and Bryson Selby Brooks; stepson, David Beddard and wife Linda, of Washington; niece, Donna Kay Younker and husband Larry, of Vestal, New York; and brother-in-law Boyce Sheham, of Seattle, Washington.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Brooks was preceded in death by two sisters, Hildreth Sheham and Margaret (Peggy) Gray.
