The Down East Seniors Club held its May 29 meeting at the Blind Center of North Carolina in Washington. President Charles Smith led the meeting. Jim Hackney played for the singing of “God Bless America,” which was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. Mike Gwynn gave the invocation, and Ed Hamrick read factoids for the date in history. Hackney provided humor.

Vernon Howell introduced Jordan Cantrell as the speaker. Cantrell is a certified financial planner with Edward Jones Investments and has her office in Washington. She said the two main concerns she addresses with her clients are: will their money last through their lifetime?; and, are there any financial blind spots that need to be handled? Everyone should have available cash that equals at least six months of living expenses. Because of price inflation, people need rising income to maintain their quality of life. This rising income generally comes from equity investments. Married investors should have their spouses involved in meetings with their financial advisors.

At the June 5 meeting, Ed Hamrick will present Curtis Avery, fire marshal with Beaufort County Emergency Services.

The Down East Seniors Club is a group of older men who meet Wednesdays from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Blind Center of North Carolina in Washington. They enjoy fellowship and an interesting program. Guests are welcome.
