To the Editor,

I was shocked to read the comments regarding veterans that appeared in your June 5 Sound Off which read, in part, as follows: “All of you who have not been in service do not know the battles they have fought. Thank you President Trump. He is a strong military man”.

Many people believe that Donald Trump was a draft dodger, and he used his father’s power and influence to get out of serving in Viet Nam by claiming that he had “bone spurs.” He has been asked several times and cannot seem to remember which foot. He did not even do alternative service, such as conscientious objectors or Peace Corps. I believe he has disrespected all those who had legitimate medical deferments. The bone spurs do not seem to have bothered his gold game.

He certainly has never been “in service” and doesn’t know the battles our veterans fought. He even disrespected a true American hero, John McCain. My first husband did three tours in Viet Nam and died of cancer due to Agent Orange. My second husband was a medic in Viet Nam and died of Parkinson’s disease, also related to Agent Orange exposure. Neither were drafted; both volunteered.

Someone had to go to war in Trump’s place, possibly to die. I sincerely hope that it was not your father, brother or son.

As I write this on D-Day, I ask that you respectfully honor those who served and died for our freedoms to do your duty as a citizen, and vote.
