Mavis Odell Daw Jefferson

Mavis Odell Daw Jefferson, age 96, a resident of Washington, died peacefully at her home on Sunday, June 23, 2019.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 26, 2019, at Oakdale Cemetery and will be officiated by Pastor John Koch.

Mavis was well-loved in her neighborhood, where she lived for 69 years. She was proprietor of Jefferson’s 11th Street Grocery in the ’70s and many people remember her for her quick wit and willingness to help.

Mavis is survived by her two children, Michael Daw Jefferson, of Oak Island, and Joy Jefferson Waters (Thomas), of Washington; four grandchildren, Tracy Jefferson Chavez (Doran), of Hawaii, Doug Jefferson (Amanda), of Chocowinity, Erica Johnston (Woody), of New Bern, and Michael Jefferson, of Oak Island; one great-grandchild, Brooke Jefferson, of Washington; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Aunest Jefferson in 1981.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 25, 2019, at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory of Washington.
