From the Hyde County Soil and Water Conservation District

Riley Gibbs, a rising senior at Mattamuskeet Early College High School, was selected to attend the Resource Conservation Workshop at North Carolina State University from June 23-28. This workshop is hosted by the North Carolina Association of Soil & Water Conservation Districts.

The Hyde Soil & Water Conservation District sponsored Riley by providing his registration fee and travel expenses. Gibbs is the son of Tanya Swain of Fairfield and Kevin Gibbs of Manns Harbor. Gibbs has grown up in Hyde County and assists Hyde County 4-H each year as a teen volunteer at their annual Hyde Seek & Discover Day Camp at the Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge. He has a love and appreciation of our natural resources and cares about the wise management of those resources.

The Resource Conservation Workshop is a week of intensive study requiring student’s attention and participation in a wide range of conservation topics. The students learned about soil characteristics and soil conservation, wildlife and fisheries management, forest management, nonagricultural uses for soils and water quality and watershed management.

The students took several field trips to different facilities and experienced hands on learning in the field. At the end of the week of study the students had an opportunity to compete for awards and scholarships through their participation in the workshop
