PANTEGO — Fun for all ages was to be had at a basketball camp this week, held by new Pungo Christian Academy athletic director Logan Van Staalduinen at Terra Ceia Christian School continuing through Friday afternoon.

In its second year, the location of the camp didn’t stop the numbers from growing. While Pungo Christian Academy is installing a new floor, Van Staalduinen was very grateful that Terra Ceia let them use the facilities this week.

“Terra Ceia was kind enough to open it up this week for us,” Van Staalduinen said. “A few of their younger kids came, but other than that, they just let us have it here. Right now the school is getting worked on and it should be done in about two weeks.”

Around 30 kids came to the camp from different age groups. Kindergarten and first graders participated from 8 to 9 a.m., second through fourth graders from 9 to 10 a.m., fifth and sixth graders from 10 to 11 a.m., seventh through ninth graders 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and all high school campers played from 2 to 5 p.m.

“I was very excited about it, we only had 17 last year,” Van Staalduinen said. “We had 35 sign up, but you know how summer plans can go. It’s been awesome. I’ve been yelling all week so my voice is gone, but it’s been a lot of fun, the kids are easy to coach.”

Eighth grade camper Bo Spencer said he’s been at the camp both years of it’s existence, and says it helped him out in his team’s conference runner-up season last year.

“We do like, a bunch of drills for 30 minutes, stretch, do dribble drills, then we do a bunch of two-on-two, three-on-three, and sometimes five-on-five.” Spencer said. “I want to win the championship this year (for Pungo). We lost on a buzzer beater last year.”

To wrap up the seventh and eighth grade practice, a game of five-on-five took place and was competitive from start to finish.

After the game’s conclusion, the high school campers came in and started warming up, including Pungo’s junior guard, Miller Lee.

Lee is also a member of the Heels Elite summer basketball team that plays at the Ed Tech building at least once a week. Lee is looking to tune up his skills for the upcoming basketball season beginning in November.

“I’m just trying to win the conference and the conference tournament championship, our JV team won the championship, but Varsity came in third,” Lee said. “The plan is to just be better than I was last week and improve on everything that we work on.”

A successful camp comes to a close Friday evening, and Van Staalduinen looks forward to holding another camp at Pungo next summer.
