Mrs. Phyllis Harris Newsom, age 72, a resident of Washington, died Tuesday, July 30, 2019, at Vidant Beaufort Hospital in Washington.

A graveside service will be held 11 AM Friday, Aug. 2, 2019, at Oakdale Cemetery in Washington, conducted by Rev. Ken Hall.

Mrs. Newsom was born in Petersburg, Virginia, on March 28, 1947. She was the daughter of the late Robert Lee Harris and Josephine Bowen Hawkins Harris. Mrs. Newsom worked in the banking industry for many years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Washington. In her spare time, Mrs. Newsom enjoyed shopping and was an avid animal lover.

On Sept. 17, 1976, Mrs. Newsom married Fritz Newsom, who survives.

Surviving with her husband are her daughter, Catherine Leigh Newson and her fiancé, Brent Harkey, both of Winterville; and her grandchildren, Anna Whitley and Jeremy Benish, Jr., both of Winterville.

The family will receive friends at her home.
