A new, local nonprofit is starting a tutoring program for students of all ages, ensuring that no child falls through the cracks in the public school system.

Reaching for the Stars Tutoring Achievement Program is currently taking applications for its after-school program starting in September. The new program targets all subjects, as well as behavioral challenges and ESL, or English as a second language.

“The mission of the program is to provide youth with knowledge and skills to improve their academics,” said Flora Brooks, the founder of Reaching for the Stars. “And what we hope to do is do one-on-one (tutoring) to improve academic performance and improve attitudes towards learning and school and encourage self-pace.”

The program, which is open to all students from Kindergarten to 12th grade, will be taught by student interns and volunteers — all former or current educators. A former educator herself, Brooks spent 20 years in the school system, spotting academic and behavioral issues that needed to be targeted.

“I saw a need, because I volunteer with students’ integrated testing, and I saw a lot of students, they were lacking in a lot of areas that I saw,” Brooks said. “… For here lately, the parents have been calling me and telling me about the students’ behavior, different problems they have with the school system.”

Along with an emphasis on academics, Brooks will be working with her daughter, former probation officer Keisha Langley, to change behavioral issues as well. According to Brooks, students will take an assessment that pinpoints their problem areas, and her team will adapt their teaching methods accordingly, offering one-on-one attention.

“You know, teachers don’t have enough time to really do a lot of one-on-one with 18 to 20 students. It’s very hard to do that,” Brooks said.

The program will be scheduled Mondays through Thursdays, from 3 to 6 p.m., and Saturdays by appointment. The rate is based on income, allowing all students a chance at academic success.
