On a hot and humid afternoon, the Pungo Christian Academy Raiders defeated Washington Montessori, 7-0, bouncing back from their season opening loss to Christ Covenant. Montessori was participating in their first regular season game of the year.

The Raiders got things started quickly and never looked back. Each team was able to let their entire roster see the field unless they were being held out with an injury.

Montessori pressured the keeper on quite a few occasions, but couldn’t get the ball in the back of the net.

For the Raiders, seniors Miiller O’Neal and Brent Benson each scored a goal, but sophomore striker Wilson Sawyer earned a hat trick on the afternoon, scoring three goals.

“It was a good game,” Sawyer said. “We worked together as a team and got things done. Made good passes, made good shots, we could’ve had more opportunities, but we played well as a team. We need to communicate better, but we just need to spread out and communicate more, because we have a pretty good team.”

Pungo’s eighth grade goalkeeper had nine saves on the afternoon, despite some good shots coming from the feet of Montessori attackers for a good portion of the afternoon.

Pungo head coach Victor Chavez said he was excited about his team being able to bounce back from their first game, and expect to get Devin Cadle back before their next match.

“We played good today, I really liked what I saw today,” Chavez said. “(We need to improve on) passing and communicating. We have good kickers and the talent.”

The Raiders will go back home to host Albemarle School this afternoon at 4 p.m. behind the school. They will travel to Christ Covenant next Tuesday in an attempt to get revenge on their season-opening opponent.
