Only six days remain to see the best photography Beaufort County artists have to offer.

Arts of the Pamlico’s 2019 Juried Photography Show is on exhibit at the Turnage Theatre from now until Sept. 5.

According to organizers, the show is an artistic lesson in quality and quantity.

“The most pleasant surprise was the amount of new photographers that submitted this year. People broke by the fear barrier and submitted for the first time,” said Thad Aley, events and exhibits coordinator for Arts of the Pamlico. “One of them almost walked out, she was so nervous and she ended up being recognized — she won first place in her category, so that was pretty amazing.”

In addition to the number of first-time submitters, Aley said the show is visually striking, in quality, imagery and attention to detail.

“Pretty much all the work was pretty stunning,” Aley said.

AOP’s juried photography show is well established, but one of only several theme-based shows the nonprofit arts organization has started hosting throughout the year in an attempt to inspire local photographers to do new work and submit it to be shown.

“Photography as an art form is kind of — in my opinion—has kind of lost its punch, but our artists haven’t lost their drive,” Aley said. “It’s a very viable art form that people appreciate, but if you don’t share your work, we don’t know it’s out there.”

Upcoming photography shows include the themes of “Monsters and Mythical Creatures” and “Casting Shadows,” which will be on exhibit during October.

“It’s easy to fit in those themes (with smaller art shows) to challenge our artists. We want to challenge them to think outside the box,” Aley said.
