Mr. John Lee Gettys, Sr., 83, of 4763 Old Blounts Creek Road, Chocowinity, died Wednesday, October 3, 2007 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville.
A funeral service was held at 11 a.m., Saturday, October 6, 2007 in the chapel of Hillside Funeral Service with Dr. Richard Sheriff officiating. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery. Larry Harding, Kenneth Pollard, Jr., Chris Pollard, Richard Pollard, Jr., Armando Vilchis and Woody Taylor served as pallbearers.
The family received friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. this evening at Hillside Funeral Service.
Mr. Gettys was born May 31, 1924 in Rutherford County. He was the son of the late Lee Osburn Gettys and Fannie Luckadoo Gettys. He was married to Lelia Spicer Gettys, who preceded him in death on Feb. 2, 2000. He was a retired drywall installer in residential construction. He had been a resident of Beaufort County for approximately 17 years and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Chocowinity.
Survivors include his children, Steve Gettys of Sacramento, CA, Dannie Lee Gettys of Forest City, NC, Bobbie Gettys Coffey of Durham, John L. Gettys, Jr. of Blounts Creek; his step-children, Elizabeth Vilchis of Smithfield, Kenneth Pollard, Sr. and Richard Pollard, both of Washington; three brothers, A.L Gettys of Forest City, NC, Claude Gettys of Bostic, NC and Rommie Gettys of Union Mills, NC; two sisters Etta Gettys Thomas of Inman, SC and Mattie Gettys Toney of Forest City, NC; 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; 8 step-grandchildren and 12 step-great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Ronnie Gettys and Clyde Carson Gettys; and one sister, Erie Gettys.
