The Tyrrell County Board of Commissioners has  appointed the county’s delegations to the annual meeting of the Southern Albemarle Association scheduled for Oct. 17 in the Vernon James Center near Plymouth.

The association was founded in 1935 by Victor Meekins of Dare County, Wallace Tatem of Tyrrell County, and others.

Its stated purpose is to make the six-county area a safe and economically viable place in which to travel, work, and live through promoting better roads, bridges, waterways, and airports.

The association played a role in the opening earlier this year of the Marc Basnight Bridge over Oregon Inlet, the addition of passenger ferry service between Hatteras and Ocracoke villages, the resurfacing of four-lane U.S. Hwy 64 between Columbia and Creswell (which opened in August 2005), and in other transportation improvements throughout the six counties.

Association officers maintain contact with the region’s Congressional members, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the governor, state legislators, NCDOT, other state agencies and regional rural planning organizations.

The association is financed by appropriations from Beaufort, Dare, Hyde, Martin, Tyrrell and Washington counties.
