From Sound Rivers

 

One Friday, state officials lifted the precautionary advisory for recreational swimming sites on the Neuse and Pamlico rivers and for sound-side sites in Carteret County north of Morehead City. Test results of water samples taken from these waters show bacterial levels that meet the state and federal standards for swimming and other contact with the water.

Results from sampling Sound Rivers conducted Wednesday also showed significant water quality improvements since last week. Six out of seven sites Sound Rivers sampled were well below the state and federal standards, according to Pamlico-Tar Riverkeeper Jill Howell. Sample sites included:

• Pamlico River at Washington waterfront
• Mason’s Landing at Tranter’s Creek
• Port Terminal (Greenville)
• Town Common (Greenville)
• Chicod Creek
• Tributary of Chicod Creek in Grimesland

The only site that failed to meet the standard for E. coli was a second location on the Chicod Creek tributary in Grimesland.
