The holiday season is a grand opportunity for criminals to prey on unsuspecting consumers, lawmen say.
People often get caught up in the holiday spirit and lose some of their awareness of what is going on around them, Chrismon said. This is when you can get very hurt, he added.
According to the police department, most scams are originating outside of the United States and investigating them is very limited.
Also, the shopper during the holidays should not have to pay anything up front in order to receive what that shopper has been told he or she has won, according to the police department.
If you think you are being scammed, contact your local law enforcement agency, the N.C. Attorney General’s Office or call 1-877-5no-scam (1-877-566-7226).
