Washington 33 North Lenoir 6

The Pam Pack (5-1, 2-0) had another successful night, knocking off the formerly undefeated North Lenoir Hawks (6-1, 1-1).

The Pam Pack were more physical up front. When they needed a push from their offensive or defensive line, they got it. Washington closed down the middle of the line-of-scrimmage, and didn’t allow many offensive opportunities for the Hawks.

With the opening drive beginning at the Washington 35-yard line, the Pam Pack defense stood up the Hawks and would block a field goal to end the drive. Washington drove down the short field and scored on an 8-yard, Mykell Warren touchdown run.

After forcing a North Lenoir punt, the Pam Pack drove right back down the field and scored on a 13-yard touchdown gallop from Jaden Hambric.

The Hawks put together a nice drive on their next possession, but missed a field goal wide-left and gave the ball back to the Pam Pack.

Antwone Godley had three big runs to put the Pam Pack inside the 10-yard line, but two penalties with first and goal set them back. Terry Moore wouldn’t be denied though, he made a couple of guys miss on third down and found the end zone for the first of his three touchdowns on the evening.

 

“Shout out to my o-line. We’ve been putting in work since the summer and people have been doubting us. It’s kind of emotional that we see all the work we’ve been putting in finally paying off,” Moore said after the win. “Feels great (to score three touchdowns), but like i said shout out to my offensive line.”

North Lenoir scored on a five play drive right before the break to cut their deficit to 19-6 at halftime.

Moore scored once in both the third and fourth quarter, and the Pam Pack defense didn’t allow a single point. First-year defensive coordinator Alex Heck was proud of the way his defense played.

“They played well. We came out and we’ve been talking about bringing the sledge hammer, and we did that,” Heck said after the game. “It was huge (getting the blocked field goal on the first drive). That was huge to get it fourth down. The kids are finally starting to believe that they can stop people when their backs are against the end zone.”

Head coach Jon Blank said he was thrilled to be 2-0 in the conference.

“This is what we’ve worked hard for in the weight room, on the track and in the class room, we talk about being smart, fast and physical every Friday night and thats what we’ve been doing,” Blank said. “Our defense is finally starting to find that identity that they used to have here. To be able to see us making big plays and playing emotional defense feels pretty good. I know what we can do with the offensive side of the ball, if we can keep the score down we’re going to be in great shape.”

Senior and captain Sherfield Smith talked about the victory and how the defense played on Friday night.

“We knew as a team that if we just filled our gaps and filled our holes there was nothing they could do,” Smith said. “They didn’t have the offense to score quickly, and we got the best run defense in the conference. It’s so satisfying to see us be so physical and strong. We’re finally the physical ones in the league and I love it.”

 

Southside 58, Perquimans 52

The Southside Seahawks (2-4, 0-1 Coastal Plains 1A) came out victorious in an absolute thriller on Friday night.

At the half, Southside trailed 30-28. After swapping scores for much of the second half, Southside scored with eight minutes left to pull ahead 50-44. Perquimans would eat up some clock and score with 42 seconds remaining in the game to go up 52-50, but that was enough time for the Seahawks to drive down the field and score with 5.4 seconds left on a Hundley Stallings 3-yard touchdown run.

Head coach Jeff Carrow raved about the night that Kenjray Coffield had, notching three rushing touchdowns on 21 carries for 201 yards, a couple of catches for 42 yards and an interception for the Seahawks.

Carrow also credited the run game to the offensive line, and especially Andre Moore, who had plenty of pancake blocks on the night.

Jamari Nelson had 16 rushes for 195 yards for two touchdowns. Davion Carter rushed 22 times for 122 yards and two scores as well.

Jaqwan Cobb chipped in for 25 yards on six carries, while Kaleb Jones Taylor picked up 61 yards on six touches.

The Seahawks will now turn their attention to the Tarboro Vikings (6-0, 1-0 CP 1-A) as they will make a trip to Chocowinity on Friday night.

Pamlico County 38, Northside 34

The Panthers (4-3, 1-1 CP 1A) led in the fourth quarter again but couldn’t quite pull out the victory on Friday night.

James Gorham led the Panthers in rushing with 8 carries and 58 yards, while Zakkai Wilson had 14 rushes for 56 yards on the evening.

Northside’s scoring was primarily through the air. Senior quarterback Carter Boyd was 7-for-15 on the evening with 171 yards and three touchdown passes.

Tyler Turner had a 50-yard touchdown catch and run and Tyler Modlin had five catches for 113 yards and two touchdowns. Modlin’s longest reception was 46-yards.

The Panthers will have to bounce back next week as they travel to Riverside (2-4, 0-1 CP 1-A).
