CHOCOWINITY — The Southside Lady Seahawks sent off their seniors the right way Thursday night with a three-game sweep of Jones Senior.

The Seahawks had six seniors play their last games inside the Southside gymnasium, but they do have a couple more games left in their regular season, going on the road to Riverside on Tuesday and Northside on Thursday.

Among the seniors were Kejasia Midgette, Kaila Lietz, Sindy Chavez, Darah Cole, Daeja Whitley and Lennon Condrey.

POINT: Southside’s senior hitter Kaila Lietz hops up to return the ball for the kill and the point in the Seahawks’ 3-0 win over Jones Senior on Senior Night Thursday.

While the season may not gone exactly the way the Seahawks wanted it to, it’s the team members that Chavez will miss the most after her first and only year of volleyball.

“I knew I wanted to play volleyball for a couple of years but I was inexperienced. I struggled a little bit at first, but it was fun,” Chavez said. “I’m going to miss the people here and the coaches because they were really great and they helped me out a lot.”

Chavez plans to attend a four-year university next year to major in business.

Head coach Atyana Starkie said she has learned a lot from her five years in coaching.

“In coaching, sometimes most people just look at the wins and the losses, but I think it’s more about the progress,” Starkie said. “This is my fifth year and my second group of seniors (I’ve been with for four years), and I’ve seen where they all came from. It’s frustrating, but we have improved a lot. That gives me more reason to continue doing what I do.”

Cole, another senior on this year’s team plans to go to Appalachian State next year and earn a degree in teaching to become a business teacher and earn her MBA. Cole also talked about her love for the game of volleyball.

“In a way, I’m kind of sad because I’m going to miss the people and the sports here. I love the game of volleyball, I’ve been playing since I was 6 years old,” Cole said. “I also swim, so that’s coming up, but I’m also really excited for college.”

The Lady Seahawks still have some work to do if they want to earn a spot in the state playoffs. They’ll likely need to win both of their last two games this season to do so.
