Leroy Nichols

Mr. Leroy Nichols, age 95, a resident of Mill Road, Washington, died Thursday, Jan. 2, 2020, at his home.

A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 5, 2020, from the Chapel of Paul Funeral Home & Crematory in Washington, conducted by Steve Hill. Burial will follow in the Nichols family cemetery, Mill Road, Washington.

The following will serve as pallbearers: Steve Griffin, Ronald Pilgreen, Glen Moore, Archie Griffin, Jimmie Perry and Bob Shagena. Honorary pallbearers will be Hunter Nichols, Logan Nichols and Damon McCoury.

Mr. Nichols was born in Beaufort County on Dec. 25, 1924. He was the son of the late Meggie Ray Nichols and Nellie Cherry Nichols. Mr. Nichols served in the Navy during World War II. He was a retired logger. As an avid hunter, Mr. Nichols was a member of the Horse Pen Swamp Hunting Club. In his spare time, he made homemade knives, built creek boats, tinkered on old tractors and enjoyed his dogs, including “DD” (Dirt Dobber).

On Dec. 17, 1949, Mr. Nichols was married to the former Erna Rowe, who preceded him in death, Jan. 2, 2013.

Mr. Nichols is survived by two sons, Michael R. Nichols and wife Susan, Lee Nichols and wife Susan McCoury, all of Washington; four grandchildren, Hunter Nichols, Logan Nichols, Damon McCoury, Melissa Nichols; four great-grandchildren, Sarah Harris, Hailey Harris, Jaxson Foster, River James Payne; and nephew, Kevin Reeder of Little Rock, Arkansas.

In addition to his parents and his wife, Mr. Nichols was preceded in death by a daughter, Sarah Joy Nichols, and sister, Ernestine Reeder.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, 2020, at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory in Washington and other times at his home.
