Wearing the jersey No. 1 comes with high expectations. Washington’s Omarion Blount has lived up to those as he continues to maneuver through milestones in his high school career. On Friday night, Blount reached the 1,000-career point mark against the West Craven Eagles in Vanceboro.
Prior to Friday night’s conference matchup with the Eagles, Blount was short of the mark by just seven points. His teammates were also aware of what could’ve possibly taken place.
Midway through the first quarter on Friday night, Blount found some space and drove into the paint, kissing the ball off the glass and through the nylon for his 1,000th point. He was greeted with high fives, smiles and words of encouragement, as Blount and his team knew what he had just accomplished.
“The feeling was amazing,” Blount said. “I was so proud of myself for reaching this milestone.”
Blount wasn’t finished, though. He went on to score 17 points — now currently sitting at 1,010 career points — with five rebounds, two assists and a steal.
The Pam Pack defeated West Craven 86-61, scoring its second-highest point total of the season.
On Tuesday night, prior to Washington’s match-up against Greene Central, Blount was given a basketball that marked his 1,000th point and received an ovation from the crowd for his achievement.
Head coach David Allewalt said he was very happy for Blount after Friday night’s accomplishment.
“Omarion is well deserving to join such an elite group of high school basketball players. To eclipse the 1,000-point mark by his junior season is a huge accomplishment,” Allewalt said. “He has many more great moments to look forward to during the rest of his high school career. I am very proud to be associated with such a wonderful individual accomplishment.”
Washington’s basketball season is essentially hangs in the balance with two big-time matchups against two of the top three teams in the 2-A Eastern Carolina Conference. The Pam Pack defeated Greene Central Tuesday night, 79-71 in overtime and head into a rematch against Kinston Friday night at home. The Pam Pack lost to the Vikings 73-70 inside of Kinston’s gym in December.
While Washington currently sits in second-place within in the conference, the outcome of Friday night’s matchup will decide who sits atop the ECC.
