ROCKIN’ RECOVERY: River City Rockin’ Blues, an all-day live music event, raised $3,500 in disaster relief funds for Ocracoke School. On Sept. 6, 2019, Ocracoke, received catastrophic flooding and damage from Hurricane Dorian. The devastation left Ocracoke students without school to attend for an entire month. Ocracoke School was flooded with more than three feet of water and extensive damage to equipment. Students took classes online until early October when they returned to class at various locations. RCRB founder Nannette Garrett organized the fundraiser concert for Ocracoke School on Oct. 12, 2019, at the Washington Civic Center. The daylong event consisted of performances by numerous musical artists, both local and regional, local food trucks, raffle door prizes, as well as a silent auction to raise funds for the recovery of Ocracoke School. Garrett recently presented the check to Samantha Hodson, Ocracoke’s girls basketball coach, at an away game in Bear Grass.
