Washington’s comeback bid falls short against Kinston

Washington (11-6, 5-2) found themselves in a deep hole that they couldn’t dig themselves out of at Dave W. Smith gymnasium Friday night, falling to Kinston, 79-67.

The Vikings (15-3, 7-0) jumped out to a 21-7 lead after the end of the first quarter. Kinston’s early run was sparked by Dontrez Styles’ two-handed flush and 3-pointer.

Styles went on to score 19 points on the evening with a couple of electric dunks.

Kinston’s Isaac Parson led all scorers with 26 points on the evening.

Washington couldn’t get any outside shots to fall early on, and that proved to be costly.

The Pam Pack scored 16 second quarter points, and 22 in the third and fourth quarters. Washington closed the gap late with the help of Rashod Smith, Omari Blount and Jamauri Bryant, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the 23-point deficit they faced in the third quarter.

Washington went on a 11-2 run in the fourth quarter, but the Vikings knocked down enough free throws to maintain separation.

Smith finished with 23 points, Bryant had 17, Blount picked up 14 and Justin Powell added nine on the night for Washington. Mykeal Jennette picked up a couple of baskets down the stretch as well, but it wasn’t enough.

The Pam Pack will be back on the floor Tuesday night when they travel to North Lenoir (5-12, 3-4). The Hawks upset Greene Central on Friday night in Snow Hill, 65-64.
