Dorothy Scott Rhodes Brownfield

Dorothy Scott Rhodes Brownfield, 84, of Washington, passed away peacefully at her home, Feb. 2, 2020, surrounded by her loving family.
Visitation will be at First Church of Christ on Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2020, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. and other times at the home of Alvin and Dorothy Brownfield, 309 Tranters Creek Road, Washington.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2020, at Pamlico Memorial Gardens.
Born in Beaufort County, she was the daughter of the late Oscar Weldon Scott and Zettie Lamm Scott. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother who loved and served the Lord with all her heart. She worked as an office manager at Smith Brothers Grocery in Washington for many years, where she loved serving her community. She was a member of Old Ford Church of Christ and more recently a member of First Church of Christ.

She was married to the late Wayne Thomas Rhodes Jr. from 1954 to 1990. After Wayne’s passing, she remarried to Alvin Brownfield. Upon her retirement, she enjoyed traveling, reading, music and spending time with family. She never missed sending birthday cards to her many nieces, nephews, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Dorothy is survived by her husband, Alvin Brownfield, of 28 years; her son, Wayne Thomas Rhodes III and wife Susan, of Lillington; her daughter, Sharon Kay Rhodes, of Washington; her brother, William Thomas Scott and wife Geraldine, of Washington; her sister, Brenda Scott Matkins and husband Phillip, of Washington. She has three stepchildren, David Garrison and wife Angela, of Daphne, Alabama, Brian Brownfield, of Jonesboro, Georgia, and Adam Brownfield and wife Jessica, of Senoia, Georgia; seven grandchildren, April Bullock and husband Jeff, of Washington, Brandon Kennedy and husband Don, of Washington, Eddie Cherry and wife Krystal, of Pinetown, Mary Elizabeth Rhodes, of London, England, Christopher Rhodes, of Broadway, Daniel Rhodes, of Pensacola, Florida, and Nathanael Rhodes, of Lillington; eight great-grandchildren, Kaylee, Tres, Landon, Walker, Christian, Brynlee, Gabe and Kelsie; five step-grandchildren, Katy, Caroline, Jack, Azlynn and Emory.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Lois Scott Vincent and Hilda Scott Burton, and one brother, Oscar Weldon Scott Jr.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
