Brown Library program revives letter writing

Dear Reader,
In this day and age of e-mail, text messaging and social media, the mailbox is too often filled with nothing but bills. To counter that trend, the Brown Library is hosting a special program this week focusing on the art of letter writing.
“With Valentine’s Day coming up, I thought it would be really good to do something about letter writing or card writing, which people don’t do much anymore,” said Brown Library Youth Services Librarian Terry Rollins.
With all the materials provided, participants will have their choice of various papers, pens and stamps to decorate their very own love letter or greeting card, just in time for the holiday.
But beyond expressions of love on Valentine’s Day, letter writing is a practical skill any time of year.
Hearkening back to a simpler, more sentimental time, letter writing also helps improve grammar and sentence structure. There’s something fundamentally different about sitting down to write a letter rather sending a text message.
“It’s more personal,” Rollins said. “It allows a person to express themselves through art. Because you’re hand-writing it, I feel it comes more from the heart or from your spirit.”
The letter-writing session kicks off Friday at 4 p.m. at Brown Library and is one of many programs on the calendar this month at the library.
“This is part of our family programming, so it gives everybody a chance to do something together,” said Brown Library Director Sandra Silvey.
Other programs are geared toward adults, teenagers and children, offering a little something for everyone.
“It’s for the whole family, so children are invited as well,” Rollins said. “It’s free, and there’s no signup required.”
