The Chocowinity Indians’ boys basketball team went undefeated throughout the season with a perfect 14-0 record. It was the first time in school history the Indians have gone undefeated in a season, capping it off with a 68-13 victory over Snowden Monday night.
It was eighth grade recognition night for the Indians. Head coach Alan Swain said he was going to let his eighth graders play as much as possible, as it was their last game in the Chocowinity gym.
The Indians’ defense was suffocating. Tequon Moore had six steals in the first quarter alone, and went on to score 23 points in the first half. He went 4-for-5 from behind the arc and grabbed five first-half rebounds.
“The way we were pushing the ball up court fast, we were passing it around and getting it around the court to find the best shot possible,” Moore said. “I definitely (pride myself in being a good defender). Its good to get a lot of steals, but more importantly it feels good to be undefeated because that’s something this school has never done before, and then won conference for the third year in a row. It makes me proud.”
The Indians jumped out to a 32-3 lead at the end of the first quarter, and led 49-3 at the end of the half.
With the running clock going in the second half, the scoring wasn’t as prevalent as the first.
The Trojans’ Randy Harrell drained three 3-pointers in the contest along with a free throw for 10 total points. Demetri Myers was responsible for seven points.
For the Indians, Moore finished with 29 points, JaVon Williams dropped 19, Chaise Smith had seven, Jamie Corprew and Josh Armstrong picked up four and MyQuan Clark hit a 3-point jumper in the contest.
“We have a good group of kids that have really bought in to what all the coaches have been preaching to them since the first time they ever met them, and they’ve seen some success because of it.” Coach Swain said after the game. “(Tequon) Moore has been great. He’s the best defender on the team. He probably averaged around 10 steals per game this year. I know he had 23 at halftime.”
Chocowinity defended their conference title again. After winning conference in football and basketball, Swain and company are looking to win the conference in baseball, as well.
