A tornado watch that includes Beaufort County and a large portion of Eastern North Carolina has been extended until 1 a.m. Friday morning. Other local counties included in the watch are Pitt, Martin, Washington, Hyde, Tyrrell, Pamlico and Craven counties.
A watch means that conditions are favorable for a tornado to occur. A warning means that a tornado has visually confirmed or picked up by radar.
Southwest winds 20 to 30 miles per hour with gusts 45 to 50 miles per hour are expected. Severe thunderstorms are possible tonight ahead of a strong cold front. There will also be a threat of heavy rainfall and minor flooding, along with gusty winds associated with this system.
Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. Use extra caution when driving, especially if operating a high profile vehicle. Secure outdoor objects.
