Hurricane Florence stands out as one of the most devastating events to hit Beaufort County in recent memory and one regional nonprofit is partnering with a local church to collect stories from those who were impacted by the storm.

This Saturday, Spring Garden Missionary Baptist Church, in collaboration with the nonprofit arts organization Working Narratives, will host a public event to record and document stories of people impacted by Hurricane Florence in Beaufort County. From 8:30 a.m. to noon, media artists from Working Narratives will record stories from Florence that will then be released as part of a radio and podcast series called “Storm Stories.”

Exploring themes of resilience and recovery in the coastal region, these “Storm Stories” will then be available on iTunes to download.

According to a press release from Working Narratives, the goal of the event is to gather personal stories about experiences during the storm, impacts from the aftermath and recovery efforts to share as part of a public education campaign. Attendees are encouraged to bring pictures, videos, newspaper clippings and artifacts from the storm to assist with documentation.

“What we’ve learned as we’ve gathered stories is that while the national media and many communities moved on after Florence, others struggled,” said Nick Szuberla, executive director of Working Narratives. “We believe hearing from those closest to an issue is critical to keeping members of the public, policy makers and

philanthropists informed. By telling stories, we build bridges where none existed.”

The “Storm Stories” project is funded in part with support from the NC Local News Lab Fund’s Disaster Relief Information and Engagement Grant Program.

Saturday’s event includes breakfast from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. and will be held at Spring Garden Missionary Baptist Church, located at 526 Gladden St., Washington.
