Duo of Demon wrestlers complete perfect season

Wrestling isn’t an easy sport to dominate. There are many techniques to learn, and it takes guts to fight through a six-minute battle with someone equally as big as the other and come away victorious. Winning one match is a feat, but going an entire season without a loss is an incredible accomplishment. P.S. Jones’ Bryant Smith and Cade Mixon completed that after last weekend’s conference tournament event at A.G. Cox.

Each of the wrestlers went 13-0 in their respective weight class in their eighth grade campaigns. They capped off the season with the title of conference champions of the Pitt County Middle School Athletic Conference.

Smith and Mixon also won the conference in their individual weight classes following the postseason tournament.

There were five members of the team to win the conference, but only Mixon and Smith were unconquered.

They both said they are excited to wrestle for Washington High School next season, especially after the Pam Pack won its sixth consecutive 2-A Eastern Carolina Conference Title.

“I just need to keep getting bigger and stronger,” Mixon said on Wednesday afternoon in the P.S. Jones gymnasium.

“I think I need to improve on my strength and technique the most,” Smith said about his goal in the offseason preparing for next year. “A lot of the wrestlers at the high school wrestled in middle school, so we’re trying to follow into their techniques that they learned here and then at the high school, too.”

Smith also played football for the Demons this past year, and plans on joining the Pam Pack in its 2020 campaign.

Mixon also played football, mostly at linebacker, but his athletic season isn’t over quite yet. He’ll be on the diamond this coming spring as the Demons and head coach John Cutler now turn their attention to baseball season.
