A frog peeks out from its lily pad perch. A trio of pelicans stares down the observer. A clown fish meets a seahorse deep beneath the sea.

These are just a sample of the colorful, creativity of Jackie Weatherly-Cadzow.

Weatherly-Cadzow’s work will be on display at the North Carolina Estuarium until April 30, a solo exhibit with nature as its theme. It’s a familiar one for the artist.

“I grew up in Michigan; my grandparents had a 100-acre farm. I always out, into the frogs and salamanders and toads — all the stuff that was there — and flowers,” Weatherly-Cadzow said.

Later, the creative cue from nature was the ocean, so near to her home in Nags Head.

“I was inspired by the ocean,” Weatherly-Cadzow said.

These days, Weatherly-Cadzow makes her home in Washington; her work can found at Lemonade Art Gallery downtown. A studio art design graduate of Meredith College, Weatherly-Cadzow is a fulltime artist, who teaches at her studio, as well as group classes, held at the Blind Center of North Carolina.

The Estuarium exhibit makes clear not only Weatherly-Cadzow’s passion for nature, but her facility with different media. The trio of pelicans are acrylic painted on canvas. The seahorse and clown fish are dye painted on silk. There’s a framed machine embroidered iris that is remarkable in its intricacy; and a mixed media textile 3D seahorse hangs from above.

Dye painted on silk continues to intrigue Weatherly-Cadzow.

“There’s so many ways to do it,” Weatherly-Cadzow said. “There are so many different techniques out there: wet on wet, wet on dry, water-soluble resist; you can use things to keep it from flowing, you can use things like salt — it moves dye around and makes a kind of starburst effect.”

Weatherly-Cadzow will host a “Meet the Artist” event on March 21, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Estuarium. The public is welcome to ask questions about her work, or purchase originals, prints and greeting cards — 10% of all sales will be donated to the Estuarium.
