City of Washington declares state of emergency

The City of Washington has declared a state of emergency, which was signed by Mayor Mac Hodges and put into effect March 25. The full text of that state of emergency declaration can be viewed here.
“It is essential to slow viral transmission as much as possible to protect the most vulnerable and to prevent the health care system from being overwhelmed,” the document read.
The state of emergency does a few things, including encouraging Washington residents to shelter in place and to limit travel to “essential activities,” including operating businesses and government services. The order also defines those services, saying they are “strongly encouraged to remain open.”
The essential businesses listed include:
- Stores that sell groceries and medicine
- Food, beverage, and agriculture
- Organizations that provide charitable and social services
- Media
- Gas stations and businesses needed for transportation
- Financial institutions
- Hardware and supply stores
- Critical trades
- Mail, post, shipping, logistics, delivery, and pick-up Services
- Educational institutions for purposes of facilitating distance learning, performing critical research related to COVID-19, or performing essential functions
- Laundry services
- Restaurants for consumption off-premises
- Supplies to work from home
- Supplies for essential businesses and operations
- Transportation
- Home-based care and services
- Residential facilities and shelters
- Professional services
- Childcare centers for specific employees exempted by this proclamation
- Manufacture, distribution, and supply chain for critical products and industries
- Hotels and motels
- Funeral services
