A man died by suicide on the Washington waterfront Wednesday afternoon, according to Washington Police and Fire Services Director Stacy Drakeford.

Drakeford said his office received a call early in the afternoon from the Pasquotank Sheriff’s Office to be on the lookout for a vehicle from that county.

“They were looking for a missing individual and gave us a description of the van he was in,” Drakeford said. “It was located by an officer, and they determined that the individual was deceased.”

Officers found the vehicle in a parking lot off of Stewart Parkway at approximately 12:42 p.m. Wednesday. Drakeford said investigators determined the individual had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. For anyone experiencing suicidal thoughts, Drakeford encouraged them to reach out to the National Suicide Prevention Hotline at 1-800-273-8255 or local law enforcement.

“Anybody feeling depressed or anxious, please contact a professional or somebody you know you can talk to,” Drakeford said. “Call the crisis hotline or call the police department where we can put you in touch with the crisis hotline.”
