The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in North Carolina continued to rise from 7,261 on Wednesday to 7,762 on Thursday. There have been 275 deaths in the state attributed to the virus, an increase of 22 overnight. There are currently 486 COVID-19 associated hospitalizations. According to Beaufort County Health Department Director Jim Madson, four of those hospitalizations have been Beaufort County COVID-19 cases.

In Beaufort County, there were 17 confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Thursday. Thirteen of the 17 confirmed cases have recovered from COVID-19. Four cases remain active, none of which are hospitalized.

Two of Beaufort County’s positive cases were asymptomatic, meaning they experienced no symptoms, according to the Thursday update from Beaufort County’s Office of Emergency Services and Beaufort County Health Department.

The number of confirmed cases in the U.S. rose from 839,836 on Wednesday to 856,209 on Thursday; these numbers include the 78,339 people in the U.S. known to have recovered from COVID-19. The U.S. has the greatest number of cases worldwide, and there are likely many more cases as those exhibiting symptoms are now being encouraged to stay home rather than get tested. Nationwide, 47,272 deaths have been attributed to the virus, an increase of 1,193 overnight.

North Carolina has confirmed cases in 93 counties.

Of Beaufort County’s total of 17 cases, contact tracing of these known, confirmed cases has concluded:

• three cases have been attributed to direct contact with a known patient from another county;
• two cases were related to travel to a known outbreak area;
• 12 cases are attributed to community spread.

All active cases are self-isolating, the update reads.

Eastern North Carolina counties with current cases include: Bertie (31), Beaufort (17), Bladen (5), Brunswick (39), Carteret (27), Camden (1), Chowan (6), Columbus (76), Craven (37), Currituck (3); Dare (15), Duplin (41), Edgecombe (62), Gates (6), Greene (14), Halifax (40), Hertford (14), Jones (12), Lenoir (34), Martin (12), New Hanover (72), Northampton (75), Onslow (39), Pamlico (6), Pasquotank (33), Pender (11), Perquimans (8), Pitt (101), Sampson (25), Tyrrell (4), Washington (22), Wayne (597) and Wilson (130). Durham (469), Mecklenburg (1,362), Wake (626) and Wayne (597) counties have the most cases in North Carolina.

Wayne County cases rose dramatically, as more than 330 inmates and 13 staff members tested positive for COVID-19 in the Neuse Correctional Institute in Goldsboro.

There have been 227 tests completed in Beaufort County as of Thursday, with 205 negatives, 14 positives and eight pending. These are cumulative numbers and include tests performed at the health department and reporting private medical facilities through the county. Three of Beaufort County’s positive cases were tested in other counties.

Cases in North Carolina were projected to peak on April 17.

“The Governor’s Office is expected to announce details pertaining to the remainder of the school year for the public school system tomorrow. We will continue to pass along this information as it becomes available.,” the update reads.
