Throughout the entirety of this COVID-19 crisis, good deeds and kind gestures have been plentiful. Whether it was serving meals to first responders and hospital staffs or sending care packages with snacks, Kingdom Life Community Church has found another way to help essential workers — providing gas for the first 100 essential workers that come through Speedway on Friday.

Calvin Woolard, the outreach coordinator for Kingdom Life Community Church, explained that there is no sign-up for the free gas, but it will be provided for essential workers Friday morning at the Speedway on John Small Avenue in Washington, across the street from Food Lion beginning at 11:30 a.m.

“We’re going to try to have a checkpoint area people will come by, and we’re going to have a group of people there checking IDs, making sure they are an essential employee. They’ll get a little ticket, so when they come up to the pump we’ll know they’ve been cleared and that they’re an essential employee because of that ticket,” Woolard said. “There’s no sign-up. People are just going to fill up. We have advertisements out on social media like our Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Hopefully, we won’t have any problems.”

According to Woolard, they will prepay for gas on however many pumps are designated for the give away. Cars will pull up, fill their tanks and drive off while the next car pulls in.

“Our goal is to do 100 cars. If we get more than 100 cars that show up, then the abundance of blessings are just going to overflow,” Woolard said. “In the small community of Washington; we’ve given away food; we’ve been giving toiletries and cleaning supplies, too. Other churches have been giving food, as well. Me and my pastor at the church were discussing, like, ‘Everybody else is giving away food, what else do people need?’ So, we were in the car at the time, actually, we were going to the gas station — Boom. Why don’t we bless people with free gas? So, it’s happening. We’ve got a team together, and now essential workers will get some free gas.”

The district manager at Speedway has approved the event, as well as a tent and a couple of tables outside of the building for people to check in.

“We’ll be there early to set up, we’ll have some music playing, but the first nozzle goes in the tank at 11:30 a.m.,” Woolard said. “To God be all the glory, now. It’s because of him that we’re doing this.”
