The Red-headed Woodpecker has some atypical woodpecker behaviors. Besides hiding away food, such as insects, nuts & seeds for meals during colder weather, the Red-headed Woodpecker can also skillfully catch insects on the fly. Their omnivorous diet is unusual in that it ranges from fruit, seeds and nuts, to a wide variety of insects, eggs, and even mice and other birds.
