Sykes charged with attempted murder

William Ray Sykes Jr., 35, an Albemarle Church Road resident, was arrested and charged with attempted first degree murder on May 17, Sheriff Kevin Sawyer reports.

Tyrrell County sheriff’s deputies responded to 809 Railroad Avenue in Columbia about 5 p.m. on May 17 after receiving a report of a fight in progress.

Officers found Jonathan Bryant, 44, of Columbia bleeding heavily from multiple stab wounds to his head, chest and arm. He was airlifted by East Care helicopter to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, where he was treated and released the following day.

Sykes was taken into custody without incident on Sunday evening and charged with attempted first degree murder. He was placed under a $250,000 secured bond and is being held in the Dare County Detention Center.
