This report is the fourth in a series on demographic, economic, health, and educational information from Tyrrell County as compared with other North Carolina counties.

Data are from the 2019 County Map Book, published by the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners.

The first report focused on educational attainment, high school graduation rates, local current expense appropriation per student, average teacher salary supplement, number of classroom teachers, and program enhancement teachers.

The second report gave data on public school facility needs, public school building capital fund [lottery] distribution, low-wealth supplemental funding, students enrolled in charter schools, and pre-kindergarten enrollment.

The third dealt with economic conditions such as children living in poverty, unemployment rate, and food insecurity rates.

This reports concerns health and dependency rates.

 

MENTAL HEALTH PROVIDER RATIO:

This is the ratio of the county population to the number of mental health providers currently practicing in that county. In Orange County there are 160 residents for each mental health provider. In Buncombe and Durham counties the ratio is 180. At the other end of the scale, Hyde County has 5,360 residents per mental health provider; Caswell has 5,660; and Gates has 11,540. Tyrrell County is the only county listed with no mental health provider practicing in the county. according to 2019 health rankings published by the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute. Actually, mental health providers see clients at the Cohoon Center in Columbia from time to time.

 

OPIATE DEATHS PER CAPITA:

This measure shows the most recent opiate-related deaths per 100,000 population among Tar Heel counties. Tyrrell, Washington and Warren had the best rating with zeros, followed by 4 in Watauga and 7 each in Avery and Orange counties. At the mortal end of the scale were Craven, Jones and Pamlico (all contiguous) with 51 each in Craven and Jones and 56 in Pamlico. Topping the list were Rowan and Stokes with 57 each.

 

MEDICAID-ELIGIBLE PERSONS:

The percentage of Medicaid-eligible persons ranges from 12% in Watauga County, 16% in Orange, and 17% in Camden, to 56% in Robeson, 57% in Vance and 69% in Martin. Tyrrell, Stanly, Catawba, Cabarrus, Perquimans and Ashe are all at 30%.

 

CHILDREN UNDER DSS RESPONSIBILITY:

These figures reflect the number of children, including foster children, under placement responsibility for the county department of social services as of June 30, 2018. Gates had zero, Chowan had 2, Hertford and Northampton had 3 each. Tyrrell was in eighth place with 11. As expected, highest numbers were in the most populous counties: Mecklenburg 537, Guilford 555, Wake 609, and Cumberland 787.

 

VIOLENT CRIME RATE:

Violent crimes are defined as offenses that involve face-to-face confrontation between the victim and the perpetrator, including homicide, rate, robbery, and aggravated assault. The figures for each county represent the number of violent crimes reported per 100,000 population. Madison is lowest with 33, followed by Yancey 43, Camden and Polk 63 each, and Ashe 81. Tyrrell is near the middle with 211, and the top five are Vance 581, Mecklenburg 584, Durham 666, Scotland 694, and Lenoir 753.
