Virginia sweetspire (Itea virginica) is a shrub that is blooming in the wetlands of Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge. It grows to a height of eight to ten feet and bears white flowers on long narrow stems three to six inches long. Its leaves are deciduous, simple, alternate, and oval-shaped. The flowers attract a wide variety of pollinating insects.
