Fewer than a dozen people showed up for a 2 p.m. July 4 rally to maintain the Confederate monument in Columbia at its present location. Sponsor Creston Simmons obtained an assembly permit earlier in the week. Four sheriff’s deputies and three paramedics were on hand, and town authorities had barricaded one block of Main Street.
