The Hyde County Historical and Genealogical Society’s Spring 2020 issue of High Tides features vignettes of five women “who across two centuries did exceptional things,” according to Linda Gray Mayo, society president and semi-annual journal co-editor.

The five barrier breakers are Abijah Collins, Ellis Credle, Kathleen Bragg, Ethel Ayers Gibbs, and Letha Spencer Selby.

These women’s stories coincide with the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment, which gave women the right to vote for the first time in the 1920 presidential election.

Caleb Bradham, the inventor of Pepsi-Cola, married Sarah Charity Credle of Swan Quarter, and that led R.S. Spencer, High Tides co-editor, to report 13 pages on the Credle family of Hyde County.

High Tides contains a biographical sketch of Curfield Peterson, a Hyde County native and inventor who retired after 25 years as an employee at the White House during the Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, L. Johnson, Nixon, and Ford administrations.

Fifteen pages of abstracts from Hyde Deed Book I in the 1792-94 period are included along with several other Hyde-related articles.
