It’s week eight of instruction at the Little Washington Sailing School, and this summer has marked a success story for the local nonprofit, despite the impact of a global pandemic.

Kelli Cooper, who serves as the lead instructor at LWSS, has helped teach kids how to sail on the Pamlico for the past three years. While this season has been a bit different from years past, she says the organization has had no trouble in accomplishing its mission.

“At the start, I know we were a little nervous about if we would be able to open up, but once we the governor said we could open, we we’re excited and made the changes we needed to as far as masks, social distancing and sanitation,” Cooper said. “They were changes that were easy to adapt to.”

Cooper says registration has been slightly lower this summer, but has been steady overall. There are still spaces available for the last two weeks of the day camp for kids that might be interested in learning to sail. The last week, running from Aug. 10-15, will be the sailing school’s annual advance sailing STEM course, featuring a regatta at Cypress Landing on Aug. 15.
