The state Department of Transportation is leading an effort to identify existing trails and define what actions need to take place to connect those trails statewide, and NCDOT wants your input, says Angela Welsh, director of the Albemarle Rural Planning Organization.

“The Great Trails State Plan builds upon local and regional trails to identify one overall trail network that is focused on connections to state parks and populated areas,” she explained.

The public can provide feedback by taking an interactive map survey and a 10-question survey. Participants are encouraged to take both surveys, which close on Sept. 30, Welsh said.

The only trails in Tyrrell County shown on the interactive map are NC 94 from the Washington County line to Columbia and US 64 from Columbia to the Alligator River.

There are no identified biking or hiking trails leading to Palmetto-Peartree Preserve on Albemarle Sound, to Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge tracts in Frying Pan, Gum Neck, Kilkenny or along Bodwell Road, to Buckridge Coastal Reserve in Gum Neck, to Lantern Acres Game Lands along Northwest Fork, or to Fort Landing, Pledger Harbor, Deweys Pier Legion Beach, the Eastern 4-H Center, Grapevine Landing, Kilkenny Landing, and Cross Landing bridge, or to the wildlife area at the eastern end of Mills Road, to name a few sites.
