CHOCOWINITY — Students at Chocowinity Primary School had the opportunity to practice their writing skills and hear from special guest readers last week.

The week’s events kicked off with a special Grandparents’ Day Read-in, during which grandparents, parents and special guests from the school system tuned in to read stories to students via Zoom.

“This is an annual event and we usually have about 200 guests on campus for this read-in,” wrote CPS Reading Recovery Teacher Lauren Johnson. “We are so thankful that every teacher was able to have at least one special guest read to their students on Monday. We are finding ways to involve our community even during a pandemic.”

The books shared Monday tied into an overall theme of “Let Your Light Shine,” which coincides with a statewide writing contest hosted by the Tar River Reading Council, a local affiliate of The North Carolina Reading Association.

Through that contest, students will have the opportunity to possibly become published authors in an NCRA book highlighting the work of school-aged writers from across the state.

“We are really excited about this project and hope it will inspire students to share some encouraging stories during this challenging time,” Johnson wrote. “It has been really difficult to teach writing virtually so this gives students a chance to practice their writing skills while inspiring others around them.”
