Total confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Beaufort County numbered 1,024 on Thursday, after hitting the 1,000-case benchmark Monday. There are now 167 active cases in the county, and seven people are hospitalized, according to the Thursday update from Beaufort County Emergency Services and Beaufort County Health Department.

According to the update, 834 of the 1,013 total positive cases have recovered from the virus; 23 Beaufort County residents have died — and another death is still under investigation, according to Jim Madson, director of the Beaufort County Health Department.

All active cases are self-isolating, the update reads.

The total number of cases that have been confirmed in the U.S. rose from 6,913,046 Wednesday to 6,962,333 Thursday; these numbers include 2,670,256 people in the U.S. presumed recovered from COVID-19. The U.S. has the highest total number of cases worldwide; worldwide, there have been 32,039,142 confirmed cases. Nationwide, 202,467 deaths have been attributed to the virus, an increase of 1,148 overnight.

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in North Carolina continued to rise from 196,500 Wednesday to 198,187 Thursday. There have been 3,356 deaths in the state attributed to the virus, an increase of 40 overnight. The state currently has 902 COVID-19 associated hospitalizations and 176,422 people are presumed recovered from the virus in North Carolina.

Eastern North Carolina counties total COVID-19 cases as of Thursday numbered (does not include number of recovered): Bertie (560), Beaufort (1,024), Bladen (837), Brunswick (1,576), Carteret (628), Camden (111), Chowan (335), Columbus (1,338), Craven (1,317), Currituck (177); Dare (268), Duplin (2,154), Edgecombe (1,313), Gates (129), Greene (581), Halifax (997), Hertford (732), Hyde (125), Jones (149), Lenoir (953), Martin (429), New Hanover (3,966), Northampton (414), Onslow (1,909), Pamlico (236), Pasquotank (692), Pender (920), Perquimans (182), Pitt (4,695), Sampson (1,788), Tyrrell (114), Washington (202), Wayne (3,250) and Wilson (2,145). Guilford (8,331), Mecklenburg (27,884) and Wake (17,158) counties have the most cases in North Carolina.

There had been 15,039 tests completed in Beaufort County as of Wednesday, with 1,024 positives. Since March, 56 COVID-19-related hospitalizations have occurred in the county, and currently one person is ventilated.

Cumulative numbers include tests performed at the health department and reporting private medical facilities through the county. Nine of Beaufort County’s cases were tested in other counties but are Beaufort County residents.

The update reminded county residents to “practice the Three W’s:” wear face coverings, wait six feet apart and wash your hands often.
