The Beaufort County Community College Foundation is proud to announce the following scholarship recipients for the Fall 2020 semester. The BCCC Foundation is currently raising funds through an online auction to support scholarships. The deadline to apply for Spring 2021 scholarships is November 13.

Stephanie Beasley-Walston, 19, received the Louise R. Lester Foundation Scholarship. The Creswell resident is part of the cosmetology program. Beasley-Walston attended Washington County High School. She currently works as a cashier at Food Lion and plans to own a salon.

Founded in 2001, the Louise R. Lester Foundation builds on the charitable works of Mrs. Louise Robertson Lester. Mrs. Lester was a native of Martinsville, Va. She was an accomplished artist, producing beautiful paintings and poetry. The foundation seeks to effect positive change in the communities and lives of the people who are served through its philanthropic support. They seek to build effective relationships with grantees through a willingness to understand the challenges they face. Scholarships are available for students facing financial challenges to continue their college education.

Carter Boyd, 17, received the Bill Pruitt/St. Thomas Episcopal Church, the Louise R. Lester Foundation and the Tayloe’s Hospital Pharmacy Medical Scholarships. The Bath resident is part of the nursing program. He is the son of Katherine Renee Boyd and Linwood Keith Boyd of Bath. Boyd attended Northside High School and plans to work as a nurse practitioner.

The Bill Pruitt/St. Thomas Episcopal Church supports a student who is a graduate of Northside High School and ineligible for a Pell Grant. The student must be in good standing with a minimum GPA 2.75. Preference is given to students entering two-year job ready programs that require an Associate Degree in Applied Science or appropriate certificate.

Tayloe’s Hospital Pharmacy Medical Scholarships are awarded annually to students pursuing a career in the medical field. Tayloe’s Hospital Pharmacy is now known as O’Neal’s Pharmacy. Qualifying students will have a 2.5 GPA or greater and must be a resident of Beaufort, Hyde, Martin, Tyrrell or Washington County. Student must demonstrate financial need.

Janay Greene, 32, received the Stephanie Zablocki Jones Scholarship. The Jones County resident is a medical laboratory technology student. Greene attended Jones Senior High School and holds an associate’s degree. She currently works at Walmart as a cashier and plans to work in a laboratory setting.

The Stephanie Zablocki Jones Scholarship provides financial support for BCCC students in the Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) program, or other medical programs. Stephanie was a graduate of the BCCC MLT program and was a phlebotomist at the Leo G. Jenkins Cancer Center in Greenville, NC. She was lost in 2006 while administering first aid at an accident scene on River Road. She was the mother of three, a volunteer youth sports coach, and assistant Scoutmaster at Troop 99 in Washington. This scholarship assists others who model Stephanie’s academic achievement and community service; helping others with great skill, compassion and dedication.

Acacia Richardson, 21, received the Dr. Nancy Alford Scholarship. The Washington resident is working toward an Associate in Applied Science in Human Services Technology. She is the daughter of Jimmy and Camille Richardson. She attended the Northeast Regional School of Biotechnology and Agriscience (NERSBA) and holds an Associate in Arts. Richardson currently works at Start Right Learning Center as a daycare teacher, and she plans to earn a Bachelor of Science in Human Services.

Established in 2018 by the BCCC community in memory of instructor Joseph Alford’s mother, Dr. Nancy Alford, this scholarship provides educational opportunities for students demonstrating financial need. Dr. Nancy Boylan Alford was the owner and operator of Carriage House Psychological Associates in Roanoke Rapids. Dr. Alford and her husband Reverend John B. Alford Jr. spent 57 years together. The Alfords want to keep her memory alive and foster the students who feel a sense of purpose by helping others. Scholarships are made available, but not limited, to students in the fields such as psychology, sociology, human services technology, and nursing.

Emanuel Romero Ruiz, 20, received the Louise R. Lester Foundation Scholarship. The Greenville resident is part of the nursing program. Romero Ruiz attended D.H. Conley High School. He is the son of Ricardo Romero and Lorena Ruiz of Greenville. He currently works as a nurse aide at River Trace Nursing and Rehabilitation, and he plans to work as a traveling nurse and a nursing professor.

Chanda Speller, 46, received the Dr. Nancy Alford Memorial Scholarship. The Windsor resident is working toward an Associate in Applied Science in Human Services Technology. Speller attended Bertie High School and holds an Associate in Applied Science. She is a mother of two. Speller currently works as a correctional officer III at Bertie Correctional Institution.

Jamari Spencer, 18, received the David Lee Jr. Scholarship. The Washington resident is part of the automotive systems technology program. Spencer attended Northside High School, and he plans to work in heavy equipment. He is the son of Katrina Barrow and Hendrick Ebron of Washington. He currently runs his own business, Spencer Pressure Washing Solutions.

Established in 2007, two scholarships are provided annually to assist students during the fall and spring semesters. One student will be selected from the automotive program and another student will be selected from the business program. Students must have and maintain a 2.5 GPA and must not receive any other financial assistance.

Narissa Taylor, 26, received the Louise R. Lester Foundation and the Golden LEAF Foundation Scholarships. The Merritt resident is part of the nursing program. Taylor attended Pamlico County High School and holds a bachelor’s degree. She currently works as a caregiver at Deaton Yacht Service and plans to work as a traveling nurse.
