BELHAVEN — The Board of Aldermen Monday approved a resolution to start the process of amending the town charter to extend the mayoral term from two years to four years. 

Belhaven’s town charter was last amended in April of 2004. With this new proposition, the council hopes to move forward in the process of lengthening the mayoral term, which would be effective with the 2021 municipal election. 

“At our last council meeting, we had a discussion about the terms and extending the mayor’s term from two years to four years to match our council members’ terms,” said Lynn Davis, town manager of Belhaven. “There are some actions that have to happen, and they have to happen in a certain order.” 

Following the approval of the resolution of intent, the next step in amending the charter is a public hearing, which will take place on January 11, 2021 at Belhaven Civic Center. 

The final step of the amendment process will take place on February 8, 2021 where the Board of Alderman will consider passing the resolution after the public hearing.
