BCCC Library busts COVID-19 myths on Jan. 26
Myths and misinformation have spread faster than the virus during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Beaufort County Community College Library continues its “Coping with COVID” mindfulness series for its Community Voices series with a myth-busting presentation.
Even as some people are starting to get vaccinated, the pandemic is still ongoing and parallel crises around addiction and mental health have also emerged. The series features speakers who will discuss yoga, drug and alcohol addiction, testing and vaccines, and myths about COVID-19. It was made possible by the Vidant Health Community Benefit Grant. Participants should register for these online Zoom presentations be emailing library@beaufortccc.edu.
The second presentation in the series on Jan. 26 at 11:00 a.m. will feature Cindy Edwards, a nationally certified nurse whose background is emergency, medicine, trauma and clinical trials. She will be discussing COVID myths and answering questions. She has been a nurse for 36 years, 13 of those as a school nurse. Since the onset of COVID, Cindy has worked closely with the Beaufort County Health Department.
Other sessions in the series include:
February: You and Yoga-Simple Moves at Home
March: The Dangers of Self-Medicating (Alcohol and drugs)
April: Avenging Addiction
May: Beyond COVID, What Comes Next?
Participants should register for these online Zoom presentations be emailing library@beaufortccc.edu.
New ELA classes offered
To help new English speakers become skilled with the language, Beaufort County Community College has offered English Language Acquisition (ELA) in Beaufort, Hyde and Washington Counties for free. Now BCCC is offering even more opportunities by offering classes on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. These classes are ideal for new English speakers to better navigate contracts, business negotiations, the legal system and the educational system with confidence.
This hybrid ELA class is offered via Zoom or in person and will instruct adults who are limited in English proficiency or whose primary language is not English. The program is designed to help adults improve their English reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills in order to further education or enhance employment opportunities. Classes range from beginning to advanced levels, and students can also earn their high school equivalency. Classes will be offered online or in person to accommodate our students’ needs.
Classes are also offered on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6-9:00 p.m., Monday and Wednesday evenings, and Monday and Thursday mornings from 9:00 a.m.-noon on BCCC’s main campus. Classes are also offered at the Hyde County Davis Center on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings from 6-9:00 p.m.
The college also offers an English Language Acquisition Citizenship class that specifically prepares students to take the United States Citizenship test. It will cover topics such as civics, the U.S. government, history, geography, reading and writing. It will also cover tips on how to study for the test and how to most effectively prepare for the test. Classes take place on Wednesday evenings from 6 – 9:00 p.m.
